Tip 84 - Try, Try Again
-------------------------------

People are busy and if you're reaching out to someone who's not a friend - yet - you may not get a response the first time. Or the second or the third.

But don't give up! You know you have something valuable to offer this person. You may have to send several emails and make a few calls. All your messages should be optimistic in tone and state how you can be helpful.

When you do make contact, don't apologize for reaching out so many times. Just jump right in as though this is the first time you've called so everyone will feel comfortable.

A couple years ago, my friend Ann wanted to freelance write for The Washington Post Express. A few weeks after sending in her resume and clips, she was thrilled to have an e-mail from the editor expressing interest. Ann wrote her back immediately and heard nothing. She e-mailed her again. And again. She considered giving up, but it was such a great opportunity for her. She upped her confidence by reminding herself that with her experince, she had a lot to offer this paper. She left a voicemail. A few days later, she had another e-mail in her inbox from the editor. It was the start of a two-year relationship that yielded dozens of stories which led to many public relations contacts and work for other publications. What if she had given up after the first attempt? Or the third?
